Action Blur & Freeze – Bannack Ghost Town

Action Blur; Oct-17-2012; 12:30pm; Bannack, MT; f/5.6; 1/1600 sec; Nikon D5100 – Kirsty Cain.

Action Freeze; Oct-17-2012; 4:30pm; Bannack, MT; f/11; 4 sec; Nikon D5100 – Kirsty Cain.

The first photo is an example of action blur. I made sure the room was dark, put the camera on a tripod and set a slow shutter speed.  Julie held still for half of the time the shutter speed was open and then ran out of the scene before the shutter closed, to create a ghosted image.

The second image shows action freeze. It was bright outside for this photo, allowing for a fast shutter speed to catch the action and enough light for the photo. The fast shutter speed allowed me to freeze Todd jumping in mid air with no blur.
